play black & white on windows 7

posted 7 November 2009

disclaimer: i am not responsible if you mess up your computer. proceed at your own risk!

having installed window 7 recently, i wanted to install my old games and see if they still worked. after several hours of installing, patching, uninstalling, reinstalling, tweaking and hair pulling i finally have black & white working flawlessly on windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.

black & white came out in march of 2001, before windows xp was released. as it turns out, i had the same problems trying to get this game to work in windows xp that i had in windows 7. therefore, this guide should suffice for a windows xp or windows vista install, but i will be referring to windows 7.

if you’ve already tried installing the game and have been met with problems, i highly suggest you uninstall everything related to black & white and start from scratch. this includes uninstalling the game, deleting the folder where you installed black & white and removing any windows registry keys that were left behind by the uninstaller.

i’m going to assume you know your way around regedit. if you aren’t, you have a lot of reading to do.

if you are on a 32 bit system, you’ll want to delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black and White
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black and White Clan Patch
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black and White Patch
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2309910519-2795697514-4011825439-1000\Software\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White

if you are on a 64 bit system, you’ll want to delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black and White
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black and White Clan Patch
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black and White Patch
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2309910519-2795697514-4011825439-1000\Software\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White

now it’s time to get to business. pop your black & white disc in your optical drive and start the installation. you can install the game anywhere you want. i have a separate hard drive just for games, so i installed to E:\Black & White. at the end of the installation, it will ask you (among other things) if you want to play the game–select no.

now is a good time to install any add-ons you wish to use. note that after each add-on you install, windows 7 will start the program compatibility assistant asking you whether or not the program installed correctly. you can select this program installed correctly for each.

windows 7 program compatibility assistant

i recommend getting the four additional creatures; the leopard, the mandrill, the gorilla and the horse as well as the villager banter add-on. you can download the football add-on now too, but you can’t install it until after you patch the game.

before you go patch crazy and install the latest one, let me tell you what i found in my research. there were a total of three patches released, patch 1.1, patch 1.2 and patch 1.3. patch 1.3 only adds support for the p5 glove. if you happen to have one of these, then you’ll want to get patch 1.3 but if you don’t you’ll want to stick with patch 1.2. in theory, patch 1.3 includes all the fixes and additions from both patches 1.1 and 1.2 and patch 1.2 includes the fixes from patch 1.1. this means you should be able to just install the patch for the final target version you want, but i had some problems that i think were related to the patch not quite installing correctly. there is no harm in installing each patch individually, so i strongly recommend that you install patch 1.1, then patch 1.2 immediately afterward. finally install patch 1.3 if you have a p5 glove.

now you can install the football add-on if you wish.

our last step before launching the game involves configuring the audio and video settings. this is the area that caused me the most grief. look in your start menu for a setup entry under the lionhead studios ltd folder and launch it.

black and white setup

since this game is now an astonishing eight years old, i’m sure your computer can easily handle the maximum detail that the game will allow. i selected maximum detail, the highest resolution available (1280×960), 32 bit color and fired up the game. much to my disbelief, the game was getting less than five fps and was flickering horribly! not only that, but i was unable to use the menu system to exit the game. once i alt-tabbed out of the game, it crashed.

black and white has stopped working

i set the next lowest detail level and tried again and experienced the exact same problem. in fact, the only setting that gave an acceptable game experience was minimum detail. are you kidding me? that’s unacceptable for an eight year old game! luckily, you can get around this problem by using the custom video settings.

black and white advanced graphics options

in fact, i enabled every single setting on this screen (exactly as shown) and got silky smooth frame rates. i have no idea what the setup program is setting when it uses maximum detail, but if you use custom instead it seems to work great.

for the icing on the cake, this game is capable of widescreen resolutions outside of those shown in the setup program. bust out regedit again and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Lionhead Studios Ltd\Black & White\BWSetup

look for two DWORD values in this key called ScreenH and ScreenW which correlate to screen height and screen width respectively.

black and white regedit screen width

make sure you select the decimal radio button for the base and enter your desired screen width and height in each DWORD. i’m using 1680×1050. for the full report on widescreen support, check out the black & white wiki page on widescreengamingforum.com.

if you still have trouble with black and white, check out the official forums hosted by lionhead. good luck!

  • Arnd

Cool, Will try this when I find the time.
Love to start playing some classics again!

    Thanks for the detailed info.

Worked perfectly for me on a Win 7 32 acer Laptop. Thanks

  • liveuk

    Does not save the game

  • Leaveyou

    Worked for me…
common mistakes were to use compatibility settings for both runblack.exe and setup.exe (wich didn't save settings for some unknown reason.)

    i run windows 7 x64 Ultimate

  • Malorn

Hey, tried everything you explained above and I'm still running into a problem. The game loads fine, goes through the intro, but when the game itself begins there is a flickering black overlay and extremely slow, jumpy framerate, much as you describe originally being your problem. Also, no changes that I have made to the graphics settings seem to be affecting the actual game graphics. This is rather strange, as I've gone through regedit and confirmed that the changes I made actually 'went through' so to speak. I'm running windows 7 ultimate on a quad-core 3.0 with an NVIDIA card.

Speaking as a Techie, I'm out of ideas, I've had my share of problems with old games, but never something so persistent and unchanging. No setting I change seem to actually affect anything, for good or ill. I'm asking you directly because in the forums it seems you were the one answering the questions anyway. I'd appreciate any advice you had as to what to try next. Thank you for your time, and please feel free to e-mail me if I've left out any key information that would be helpful.

  • darkphoenix78

Thanks followed it all but hte screen res bit worked great. Definatly sumthing to do with patching the game. Many thanks for the help

  • http://jeffclark.me Jeff Clark

sorry you're having problems with the game. it took me a long time to get things just right, but i've outlined the exact steps i took above to get it working.

where did you install the game? if you installed it inside your program files (x86) directory, you might be having permissions problems when you launch the game. if you did, try to launch the game as an administrator. also make sure you are not using any compatibility settings.

  • http://jeffclark.me Jeff Clark

if you are having problems saving the game, try running the game as an administrator. windows vista/7 changed how programs write data to the hard drive if the program is installed in the program files directory. i always install my games on a separate partition to get around this issue.

  • Malorn

Thanks for the reply. It is installed in program files (x86) and I am fairly familiar with vista/7's lovely idea of 'protecting' my files from me. I did as a matter of fact run it as administrator, as you said I've often found that helpful in resolving most of the *interesting* quirks that vista and 7 have sometimes. That and beating it with a stick and telling it that it can't change anything when I'm not looking, which is it's other charming trait. I also, in my quest to make this run, reset the permissions on b/w folder to let everything access it.

Other than the first time I tried running B/W, I have had various compatibility setting on/ I will try it without anything and see if that fixes it. Did you find that it wouldn't run with compatibility settings?

Again thank you for the help, and your guide is a wonderful resource. Such a pity a good game like B/W is so hard to get running.

  • Malorn

Well what do you know, that was the problem. Thanks Jeff, you're damn good at this.

  • http://jeffclark.me Jeff Clark

    glad you got it working.

  • Andreas

I've done all your steps with one exception. I used a crack AFTER installing all of the patches and updates. I'm not sure if it's possible to get it to work with that but I really couldn't find anywhere to buy the original game… Well, anyway, after cracking the game and trying to start it up, I get a pop up that says “It's not possible to find the procedure start address ?Initialise@LHDebugStack@@QBEHXZ in the DLL-file LHLogR.dll.”.

Do you have any idea of how to fix this? The game works with the crack if I don't install the patches. It even works if I install the creature updates, but as soon as I install the patches, I get this problem. I would really like to play with the patches installed, though.

    Thanks in advance,
    A

  • Dont-look-now

I followed your guide and the game runs on an administrative account, but when a non admin runs it the game says, “You need DirectX 7 or higher to run Black and White.” I have tried running it with Run as admin in the compatibility properties, but it doesn't work. I'm running Windows 7

  • Bill

This worked well on my system just upgraded to windows 7 – thanks

  • SupaSpy

Are you shure it works for widows 7 beause i'm not buying the game for nothing ;?

  • VENEZOLANO

it didn't work for me, i use windows 7 x64-Bit, i installed the game but when i run it, it doesn't do anything (no windows or reaction at all) but it executes in the task bar as “runblack.exe*32″ i did everything you said, i follow every single step but it looks i have no luck; oh well miracles DO NOT happens anymore u.U”

  • FUTCH YOU AZZHOLE

I fixed my problem, well i gave up, i uninstalled b&w and i started playing GTA Episodes from Liberty City on STEAM and problem solved, f*ck lionhead studios because they don't support their own games, i sh*t in micro$oft & Lionsh*t

Some sounds in the game are not plaeyd:
    - when the villagers great me near the tiger head they are dancing, but no dancing music is heard
    - when the temple is built, the music from the intro is not played
    - when I select diffrent quests the music that should have played while the villager explained the quest to me
I tryed it on all patch versions and got nothing… I know that those sounds should be there because I played this game a lot when it game out.. I am playing the game with the original game CD inside..

    Please help, thnx!

  • Katsotse

    Hey there,

I can't even get the game to install at all. In a nutshell, my computer does't seem to want to accept the installerand claims it's incompatable. How Do I run the installer in a compatable fashion?

  • Zelnixie

What exact problem did this guide fix? I'm not going to attempt it and do a bunch of hard work if it doesn't fix my exact problem as this game worked flawlessly on XP for me, but not Windows 7.
When the game opens to the video of 3 people walking, it's very laggy & skippy for me and unplayable.

  • http://jeffclark.me Jeff Clark

this is the exact issue i experienced as well, and was the reason i wrote this article.

  • http://mafutrct.wordpress.com/ mafutrct

i got rid of the flickering using to your suggestion. thank you!

  • Blacky

Ok this won't work for me since I can't even install B&W, it always has trouble at data2.cab . I can't find any place to download this file at either T.T If anyone knows a free and working site where I can download that file, please tell me.

  • Kaida

Great stuff! I was so sad to lose this wonderful game. I hope Creature Island works too! :)

  • Kaida

Oh, sorry, wrong button! I especially like being able to set the resolution in the registry to my monitor size, It's stone fantastic.

Works like a charm, I was impressed.

  • Archicorn27

That is fine my friend…but even before getting to work I get this message on running the setup or Autorun.
But your guide is good. You really worked hard,of that I’ve no doubt.

  • Archicorn27

    Ohh…the message

“The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you’re running.Check your computer’s system information to see you need an x86(32-bit) or x64(64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher”

  • Fishle02

I don’t know if anyone else is having this problem, but when I try to customize the graphics under the setup screen, the settings never save. I select everything and then hit save & exit and if I pull up the setup screen again it goes right back to “maximum detail.” anyone know how to fix this?

  • http://jeffclark.me cowgod

i should have mentioned this in the article, but once you save and exit, your settings really are saved. however, if you reopen the settings, they will return to defaults.

  • Albekurky

Hi i dont know if this will be replied but i did everything as you have said yet when i start up the game it stays in a black screen with the circular loader thingo and stays there for ever and dosent load up. any sugestions?

  • BenGRant

Great guide man I want to shake your hand for giving me the opportunity to play this amazing game again. All works great except for one thing – there is no music! There are sound effects such as birds and doors[in the temple] and both music volume and sfx volume are turned up to full. The music being one of the best aspects of the game, could you please let me know of any way you know to get the music to work. Thanks!

  • http://jeffclark.me cowgod

glad i could help you out. to get the music working, copy the Audio folder from the game disc into your black & white installation directory. i should probably write a quick article on this…

  • http://jeffclark.me cowgod

copy the Audio folder from the game disc into your black & white installation directory. that should fix it.

  • BenGRant

that seems to have worked but I do believe there are some missing files. Do you think you could Rapidshare your Audio folder? Much appreciated and thanks again for the help!

  • s7even

Haha! I cant believe this worked! I spent like and hour wondering what was going on before I read this. Great guide!

  • http://twitter.com/namelesslol Lucas

    MAN! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
And I didn’t even to reinstall it, changing it to custom worked after I deleted de configuration part of the registry,
I think the game kinda had to create a new one, so custom setting would actually be in effect.
    I LOVE YOU! SERIOUSLY!

    edit:
If anyone else wants to delete the registry entry its this one:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareLionhead Studios LtdBlack & WhiteBWSetup

(the same one you would have to go to change resolutions)

  • JakeSherlock

Hey Mr. Cowgod. Thanks for the hard work. I just went through all this myself. I’m running windows Vista 32bit and dual displays on a Radeon HD3500.

Problem #1: Dual displays cloned caused the game to appear full of artifacts and have two images per screen. Alt-Tab had to be used to exit.

Problem #2: No CD. Of course like many, no CD. So. Random search found patch. But…

Problem #3: In trying to fix my video issue without knowing Dual Displays wont work I installed the 1.3 Patch. Which of course was looking for P5DLL.dll. And I didn’t know at the time that the 1.3 Patch was 1.1 and 1.2 combined with P5 capability. So I downloaded the dll and… the game wouldn’t start.

Problem #4: It wouldn’t start because now it’s Version 1.3 and my patch was for 1.0 so it’s looking for a CD. Again, download new patch for Version 1.3 and start.

At this point I had clicked every compatibility check box there was. No compatibility box made any difference.

Problem #5: Loaded game! Yes… But 800×600 sucked. I changed, just like you had, all the custom setting up and then changed the registry to 1280×1920 and vua la! Nice large graphics. No-CD required. Version 1.3 without P5 thing. BUT.

Problem #6: I need help on this one. I have major clipping errors. Mountains in the foreground are transparent and you can see the background mountains through them! I’m sure it is some simple shadowing setting or something but haven’t played with it yet. Do you have any experience with this?

    Thanks
    -Jake

PS, don’t let this site go down. Resources like this are rare and highly useful.

  • JakeSherlock

I figured it out. Changed the resolution and it seemed to work fine. Down from 1280×1920 to 1080×1920.

  • http://jeffclark.me cowgod

great! glad you got it working.

  • Mustangsally

Could you explain how to find the installation directory? Sorry, I’m not that tech savy…

  • http://jeffclark.me cowgod

open up regedit and look at the following value to find out where you installed black and white: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareLionhead Studios LtdBlack & WhiteGameDir

  • Kirroth

I’ve been able to install BW and the patches, and play the game but with two problems I don’t know how to fix.

Problem 1: I can’t add new creatures, like the Horse or Leopard. They appear to install, but when I go to the first land in BW, the guy in the hut has no special creatures for me.

Problem 2: I can’t make a soccer field. I know I need eight scaffolds, but I can’t combine that many. I can only make seven.

Anyone know a way to fix this? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but that didn’t fix either problem.

  • Someshit

can’t get it to reinstall, as it thinks its already installed. i think its a preferences problem but can’t find the preference to change

  • Blewyn

Er…I have a problem. I installed B&W normally, and it crashed on startup (patch ver 1.1). So I found this page. I deleted all the regedit keys (B&W already installed at this point) then tried to patch to 1.2, and it wouldn’t work. I try to uninstall and it crashes with “failed to load dll E:”. Can you help me unb0rk it ? As it is now, I can’t install or uninstall b&w.

Odd thing is I previously had it installed under the same system and it worked fine (different system drive but same windows disk, just did a new clean install)

  • Simplypwned

omg thank you this worked perfectly

  • B&W1

Hi, I have a problem with my Custom or Maximum settings not appearing as such, in game.

I have a more than capable 64b W7 system, but I’m guessing it’s something to do with my ATI 5700 card out-dating the game.

Is there any workaround the graphic configs such as the trick with B&W2?

  • http://jeffclark.me cowgod

if you delete all the registry keys and the folder where you installed black & white, you have done the same thing as the uninstaller would do. so delete everything as i described in the beginning of the article and start from scratch with a new installation from the cd, then proceed with my steps in the article again. that should work.

  • Dontemailme

thank you your a life saver this is probobly my all time favorite game and i couldnt get it running on my new computer

  • Dreaddrama

Hey, i’ve installed it on a different harddisk, but i can’t get the patches through. When i had teh game installed in program files, it was that niether parameters stupid error, now it says that i have to install the game first. Wtf?!
When i try to enter the game =>> black screen with cursor for 15 seconds or so.

Please help! I hunger for this game..

  • Guitarjoe91

    Howdy

I followed the guide but am having problems.  No matter what I do on my win7 pc in the setup utility, after I run the game, everything displays in minimum settings.  It is very curious, because I had zero problems getting the game to work on my brothers computer that runs xp.

  • Tigerw0lf

I followed your steps, but unfortunately the intro movie is still very laggy and then freezes up and closes after the consciences introduce themselves. I’m running a GeForce graphics card and Vista. Very frustrating since my computer can run high quality new graphics games, but not this one!
    Any ideas??

  • Brad

Dont know if your still answering questions but my black and white freezes when i get to the demo of the two advisors telling me how to move and i have to shutdown using the power button. Followed the guide to the letter trying various settings. Any ideas?

  • Jackwridge

Ive been trying to get Black and White to work properly again since Windows XP Im now on Vista. I keep having a problem with the save games and my alignment and God symbol constantly resetting to neutral. Is there anything else I can do without installing Black and White on a windows 2000 partition? I have tried everything to get the game to work properly – installed patches, cleaned the registry, run in 98 compatibility as administrator, installing it in another folder in the Harddrive etc. and even tried playing the game on other XP and Vista computers. Ive even downloaded the game to see if it was a problem with my disk but it isnt. If anyone has any advice to get this game working again I would be incredibly grateful. I really want to play this game again!! Ive meddled and cleared the registry and no such luck fixing this problem. Quick Reply[Edit Tags]

  • http://jeffclark.me cowgod

i’ve never had that problem.  vista and 7 both have problems if you install the game in the program files directory, so try to install somewhere else (like “c:gamesblack & white” for example).  also, run the program as an administrator.  you do not need to use any compatibility settings besides running as an administrator, and don’t install the 1.3 patch unless you have a p5 glove.

  • http://jeffclark.me cowgod

that’s really strange.  usually if your pc does a hard lock like that it means you have a hardware problem, not a software problem.  do you have problems running other games too, or just black & white?

  • Mark

I also have this problem.  Please someone help.  I’ve looked everywhere and no one has the answer.

  • Mark

Cowgod, nice article.  I have the same issue as Andreas (12 months ago).   Do you have any knowledge on what is causing this? I really want to play this game.  Please Cowgod, you’re my only hope. lol

  • Mark

Cowgod, I finally got it. The first 2 cracks were the same and didn’t work.  I found a third one here http://www.freeinfosociety.com/site.php?postnum=890 and it worked.  Running on Windows 7 64 bit.  I’ll come back here if I find any additional problems.

  • Moorcroft Nicholas

Cowgod im Windows 7 32bit and mine just has a loading mouse pointer and black screen ideas?

  • Stefanknivsta

I had the same problem. This worked for me:
    1. Move the crack temporarily to another folder.
    2. Insert the original runblack.exe into the Black and White folder and run it.
    3. You will get a message saying that you need to insert the cd. Press cancel.
    4. Now move the crack back into the folder, replacing the original.
    5. Run the crack and the game should work.

The game decided at the end of land 2 to just stop working and I got this problem. I launched the game several times and rebooted the comp without success, and then by chance I fixed it by doing this.

    Hi Cowgod,
Sorry to revive, yet again, such an old article – I was wondering if you could answer a quick question. I think I followed your uninstall instructions to the letter, but something seems to have gone wrong somewhere. Now, when I try to reinstall the game, the install shield immediately asks me if I want to uninstall the game. If I click no, it closes. If I click yes, it says it can’t find the .dll required (because it’s deleted…). Basically, I can’t reinstall.

I’m kind of annoyed at myself for ballsing this up. It worked perfectly before I did this – the only issue was that I couldn’t get the creature unlockers to work. Any insight you could give on my current problem would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks…

  • kairos

thanks man black & white work perfectly, and if you want change your alignment:
Do this only if you know how to change the Registry. If you don’t
know, it is better not to change it since it keeps all you computer
    info!!!!!

    1-Enter the Registry Editor.

2-Go to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Lionhead Studios Ltd
Black & White LHMultiplayer Profiles _P_r_o_f_i_l_e_N_a_m_e

3-You will see a value called LoveBuckets. This is the value that
    keeps your alignment. Edit its hexadecimal value to00 00 00 00 00 00 F0 3F
    to have a 1.0 alignment (good) or to 00 00 00 00 00 00 F0 BF to have a -1.0
    alignment (evil). You can also set it to 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 to have a
    neutral alignment.

  • MBO

I’m having a problem patching the game. I have two errors. One is “neither command line parameter specified in an existing directory”, just like Private had, and then an error saying my game version is incompatible with the patch. What can I do?

    thanks for help

  • Jeff the ViperMan

I don’t know if you’re still out there, my friend, but you’re a genius.

Today, 8/14/2011, I found my old B&W CD’s WITH the keys (I know!  Holy crap!) AND even the Creature’s Isle expansion, which I never even remember buying.

A few frustrated hours later I found this page, and within minutes, was watching flawless cutscenes and playing the game.  Amazing.  Thanks for your help.

If anyone is still wathcing this thread … I just installed WIndows 7. Before I try installing B&W with these instructions, can anyone tell me whether installation and/or playing it requires using AN administrator account, or THE Administrator account (the hidden one that you have to use a proceudre to enable)? Obviously, I’d like to use my normal account (I am the only user and therefore an admnistrator), if I can. Thanks.

Hello, I noticed you were just focusing on the graphics for the game in this and how to patch. I’m mainly looking at how to save the game! I will be playing for hour’s then all of a sudden game crash, so i’ll be like w/e re open the game to realize i’m back at the beggining cutscene. So I start playing again but only to get bored then stop playing after like 10 minutes then save and quit. So I do that then I cant get my game to save my file. It goes through the SAVE screen then when I try to load the game it’s as if I never saved. Would someone please be able to tell me why this is? Should I run it in compatability mode or something. PLEASE HELP!

Holy crap on a stick!!!!  It all worked and the game looks like new and the detail punched me in the face. Running it in 1920×1080 is too sweet.

  • Van-langen

Works absolutly great. 1.000 times Thank you Cowgod. I belive in U from now on ;-)

  • Pentabyte-Man

Thank You it worked fine! But i cant save my game… It ever startet a new game and my saved game does not exist! What should I do?

  • Andrewsch

Hi everyone; I would like to just add that cowgod is really onto this stuff.  I originally installed my Black and White and Isles onto my 64 bit windows 7 Radion 5xxxx HD Vaio Laptop. I had all this trubel with graphics being poor and the saved games not appearing  then I folowed cowgods steps and…..
No administrator needed on and I can save my games and they take, as they are not saved into Program files anymore.

What is more, the reason I am posting this is for those out there who keep talking about the graphics quality not being up to high Custom settings in game, this has to be related to starting the game as administrator, (a sort of workaround for the saving problem.) However when I do not have to use admen to play the game I get super cool high end lighting, mesh, skins, everything.  What I am thinking  this must do is disable some of the High Custom rendering settings in  game setup seeing the games incoding as a violation somehow, this is all linked to the fact that black and white has an internal profile and setup save. Most new games have saves sent to documents file.
This extends to…. you got it…setup save and I finally got my add-on beasts working. The add-ons worked before but some times the game crashed this dose not happen now at all when talking to the trainer on land 1.

Long story short Cowgod was right and I am vary sorry to anyone who has saves and profiles that worked hard on there pet,  start over using this setup, and you will be one happy b&w player.

I followed the guide and I only get the crappy graphics in-game.. All settings are turned on in the advanced pane..

Setting compatibility mode to Win2000 renders the game unable to save player symbols and other things (included shortcut keys)..

So I turned compatibility off.. Running as Administrator does still not allow for better graphics settings..! :-(

    Hello.
I have win 7 Ultimate OS. An 1Gb Video Card (AMD 6800 series) and I cannot setup max video settings.
I installed the last drivers. DirectX 11 and DirectX 7 for Black and White.
I tried to configure Custom settings instead max settings. But when click save and wxit and I come back, I still in min settings: 640×480 16b, It says max settings though, but the resolution is so poor, and also the textures in the game.
    Could anyone help me please?
    Thanks

    Thanks =)

Still very useful after all these years!

I can’t get the custom setup to work. I click everything, press Save and Exit, and when I reopen the setup again everything is gone!

So, not sure if anyone still checks this out but I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. How I got this to work is I followed everything he did as well as going into my compatibility mode and putting “Run in 256 colors” and “Run as Administrator” I also went to my game directory and made sure none of it was marked as “Read-Only” and viola. I now have amazing graphics as well as it being able to save. I had an issue where running it under compatibility for windows xp made it so I couldn’t change any of the controls/settings so if you’re having that problem as well, just take off the compatibility.

sorry, this back and forth explanation of this is what i did but wait it didnt work so i had to go back and do this is a bit confusing. could someone please dumb it down a bit for me?

    such as

Step 1 if you have this, then change this to that. if you dont then you can skip.>
Step 2 install B,W. (do you want to play now?) click no.
    Step3….ect

  • jaime

Example, i did not install the game on this laptop that i’m on, its W7 64 so do i still need to change around the registry keys?

Hi, I just installed B&W1 yesterday when I found my old cd by accident. I had no problems patching, starting or playing the game out of the box at all. It runs perfectly BUT I CAN’T SAVE…. 90% of the time I try to save I crash to my desktop with a “has stopped working” window (also applies to quicksave and autosave). Any suggestions? I have tried vanilla, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 with and without both admin and compatibility. The only difference I saw was that with xp compatibility I cannot go above 800×600

  • raubtier

    win7 x64 ulti btw.

  • raubtier

Ok it works now. It seems like using the setup for visual adjustment caused the problem. I haven’t changed anything on the visuals (resolution or details) since my last reinstallation and now it runs for hours without problems. Don’t ask my how that is related to saving the game…
